Definition
Let be a scheme, and let be the category of schemes over with the fppf topology. For an -scheme , let be its functor of points. An algebraic space over is a functor such that:
- is a sheaf for the fppf topology.
- For all -schemes and maps , , the fiber product is isomorphic to for some scheme .
- There are an -scheme and a map with the following property. For every -scheme and map , the induced morphism is surjective and étale.
Remarks
Every -scheme gives an algebraic space . Clause 1 holds because representable functors are fppf sheaves, clause 2 because , and clause 3 holds with . A functor that is not a sheaf is not an algebraic space. For example, the constant presheaf with value fails clause 1: on the disjoint union of two copies of it should have four sections, but it has two. Clause 2 says that the diagonal is representable by schemes, and clause 3 then makes sense. Some authors use the étale topology in clause 1 and add a quasi-compactness condition on the diagonal, as in Knutson's book.
