Algebraic structure
Builds on SignatureStructureFinitary operation
Definition
Let be a signature whose symbols are all function symbols, each with an arity . An algebraic structure of signature , or -algebra, is a pair such that:
- is a nonempty set, the universe of ;
- for each symbol of arity , is an -ary finitary operation on .
An operation of arity is identified with an element of , a constant. So a -algebra is the same as a structure for the purely functional signature .
Remarks
Example: is an algebraic structure of signature . Addition is a map , negation is a map , and is a constant.
Non-example: with the map is not an algebraic structure, because , so clause 2 fails for the unary symbol.
A class of algebras, such as the class of groups, is given by a signature together with axioms that the operations must satisfy. The axioms are not part of the definition of an algebraic structure. Some authors allow the empty set as universe when has no constants.
