Definition
Let be a field with algebraic closure . Let be the multiplicative group. An algebraic torus over is an algebraic group over such that as algebraic groups for some . The torus is split if already over .
Remarks
An algebraic torus is a linear algebraic group, and is its dimension. One can replace by a separable closure of in the definition.
Example: over , let be the circle with . Over , the map is an isomorphism , so is a torus of dimension . It is not split, because is compact while is not.
Non-example: the additive group is not a torus. The ring has only constant units, while has the unit , so .
