Almost everywhere
Builds on Measure spaceNull setAlmost surely
Definition
Let be a measure space, and let be a statement about the points . The statement holds -almost everywhere if there is a null set such that is true for every .
Remarks
Let be Lebesgue measure on and let for rational and otherwise. Then holds -almost everywhere: take , a countable set, so . The statement does not hold -almost everywhere, since it fails on , and every measurable set containing has measure . The set where fails is only required to lie inside a null set; it need not be measurable itself. The usual abbreviation is a.e., or -a.e. On a probability space, almost everywhere is called almost surely.
