Abstract harmonic analysis Definition
Almost periodic function on a group
Definition
Let be a topological group. Let be the Banach space of bounded continuous functions with the norm . For and , let be the function . A function is almost periodic if the set is relatively compact in .
Remarks
It is a theorem that the left translates alone, or the right translates alone, already form a relatively compact set exactly when is almost periodic. For an abelian group, left and right translates agree, and the definition is the one of almost periodic function. The almost periodic functions form a closed subalgebra of that contains the constants and is closed under complex conjugation.
Example: let be a continuous unitary representation of on , let , and let . Then . The vectors and lie in spheres of , which are compact, and the map is continuous into . So the translates of lie in a compact set, and is almost periodic.
Non-example: on , the function is bounded and continuous but not almost periodic. The translates converge pointwise to as , but for all , so no subsequence converges uniformly.
If is compact, every continuous function on is almost periodic.
