Definition
Let be a variety of algebras and let be an algebra in . Let be a family of algebras in with homomorphisms . Call a family of homomorphisms compatible if for all . An amalgamated free product of the over is an algebra in with homomorphisms such that:
- the family is compatible;
- for every algebra in and every compatible family , there is a unique homomorphism with for all .
It is written , or for two factors.
Remarks
The amalgamated free product exists in every variety and is unique up to a unique compatible isomorphism. It is the quotient of the free product of the by the smallest congruence that identifies the images of and for all and . With the trivial group in the variety of groups, it is the free product. Usually the are embeddings; whether the are then embeddings depends on the variety, and for groups they always are.
Example: in the variety of groups, , with mapped to the subgroups of order , is isomorphic to .
Non-example: in groups, the direct product with the two coordinate inclusions is not . Clause 2 fails for and sending to two non-commuting transpositions, since the generators of commute.
In Mathlib the construction for monoids and groups is Monoid.PushoutI.
