Amalgamation property
Definition
Let be a signature, and let be a class of -structures closed under isomorphism. An embedding is an injective map between -structures that preserves and reflects all functions, relations and constants. The class has the amalgamation property if the following holds. For all and all embeddings and , there are and embeddings and with .
Remarks
The structure is called an amalgam of and over .
Example: the class of finite graphs has the amalgamation property. Given and , take the disjoint union of and , identify with for each , and add no new edges. Two vertices of are adjacent in the result exactly when they are adjacent in , and the same holds for . So the inclusions of and are embeddings, and they agree on .
Non-example: the class of graphs with at most vertices fails the condition. Let be one vertex , let be an edge , and let be two non-adjacent vertices . In any amalgam , the images of and are distinct, since one is adjacent to the image of and the other is not. So has at least vertices and is not in the class.
When may be the empty structure, the amalgamation property implies the joint embedding property: any two members of embed into a common member.
