Amenable Banach algebra
Builds on DerivationContinuous dual space
Definition
Let be a complex Banach algebra. A Banach -bimodule is a Banach space with bounded bilinear left and right actions and that make an -bimodule. The dual space is then a Banach -bimodule with and for , , . A bounded linear map is a derivation if for all . It is inner if there is with for all . The algebra is amenable if, for every Banach -bimodule , every bounded derivation is inner.
Remarks
In cohomological terms, is amenable if and only if for every Banach -bimodule .
Example: . Let be a derivation and put . From one gets . Put . Then , and by linearity for all . So every bounded derivation is inner.
Non-example: let be the free group on two generators, which is not an amenable group. By Johnson's theorem, is amenable if and only if the locally compact group is amenable. So is not amenable: some bounded derivation into a dual bimodule is not inner.
A C*-algebra is amenable if and only if it is nuclear.
