Definition
Let be a sequence of counts with generating function or . Analytic combinatorics is the branch of enumerative combinatorics that derives the asymptotic behaviour of as from . Here is viewed as an analytic function of a complex variable . Its main methods are:
- location of the dominant singularities, which fixes the exponential growth rate;
- singularity analysis, which transfers the local behaviour of near a dominant singularity to the coefficients;
- saddle-point estimates of the Cauchy coefficient integral, mainly for entire functions .
Remarks
The basic principle is the Cauchy–Hadamard formula. If has radius of convergence with , then . When , Pringsheim's theorem says that is itself a singularity of .
Example: the Catalan generating function is . Its dominant singularity is , where behaves like . Singularity analysis then gives .
Non-example: a proof that by counting subsets is not analytic combinatorics. It uses no property of a generating function as a function of a complex variable.
