Definition
Let be a Polish space, and let be the Baire space. A subset is analytic if or there is a continuous map with . The class of analytic subsets of is written .
Remarks
Every closed subset of is analytic: if is nonempty, it is a Polish space, and every nonempty Polish space is a continuous image of . More generally every Borel subset of is analytic. Non-example by counting: in there are only analytic sets. Indeed, each nonempty one is the image of a continuous map on , and such a map is determined by its values on a countable dense set. Since has subsets, some subset of is not analytic. The following are equivalent forms of the definition. is the projection to of a closed subset of . is the projection to of a Borel subset of for some Polish space . is empty or a continuous image of a Polish space. Complements of analytic sets are called coanalytic, and they form the class .
