Analytical hierarchy
Definition
Work in the language of second-order arithmetic, which has number variables and set variables. It is interpreted in the standard model, where set variables range over all subsets of . A formula is arithmetical if it has no quantifiers over sets; it may have free set variables. The classes of formulas and are defined by induction on .
- is the class of arithmetical formulas.
- A formula is if it has the form with in .
- A formula is if it has the form with in .
A set is , or , if a formula of that class defines it in the standard model. The formula must have one free number variable and no other free variables. A set is if it is both and , and analytical if it is for some .
Remarks
Example: let be the set of such that program computes the characteristic function of a well-ordering of a subset of . "Every nonempty set in the field of the ordering has a least element" is a universal set quantifier over an arithmetical formula. So is ; in fact it is -complete, so it is not .
Non-example: the set of Gödel numbers of second-order sentences true in the standard model is not analytical, by Tarski's undefinability argument.
Every arithmetical set is , and the inclusion is strict. By a theorem of Kleene, the sets are exactly the hyperarithmetical sets.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
