Anderson localization
Builds on Self-adjoint operatorSpectrum of an operatorEigenvalueIndependent and identically distributed random variables
Definition
Let and let be a bounded self-adjoint operator on . Let be an interval. The operator exhibits Anderson localization in if:
- the spectrum of in is pure point: the spectral subspace of for has an orthonormal basis of eigenvectors;
- every eigenvector of with eigenvalue in decays exponentially: there are and with for all .
The main case is the Anderson model , where , , and , , are independent identically distributed random variables. One says the model exhibits Anderson localization in if does so for almost every .
Remarks
Example: a diagonal operator with a bounded real sequence exhibits localization in every interval. Its eigenvectors have one nonzero entry, so they decay faster than any exponential.
Non-example: the free operator on has spectrum and no eigenvalues at all, since its Fourier transform is multiplication by . So clause 1 fails in every interval that meets .
For the Anderson model with a bounded density of the , localization holds in for the whole spectrum, and in every dimension for large . The strongest form, dynamical localization, also bounds the spreading of uniformly in time.
