Angle at a point

Definition

Let AA, BB and CC be points of a Euclidean space Rn\mathbb{R}^n with A≠BA \neq B and C≠BC \neq B. The angle ∠ABC\angle ABC is the angle between the vectors A−BA - B and C−BC - B. Thus it is the unique real number θ\theta with 0≤θ≤π0 \leq \theta \leq \pi such that cos⁡θ=(A−B)⋅(C−B)∥A−B∥ ∥C−B∥.\cos \theta = \frac{(A - B) \cdot (C - B)}{\|A - B\| \, \|C - B\|}. The point BB is the vertex of the angle.

Remarks

The angle is symmetric: ∠ABC=∠CBA\angle ABC = \angle CBA. The angle is π\pi if and only if BB lies strictly between AA and CC on a line. It is 00 if and only if AA and CC are on the same ray from BB. Mathlib's EuclideanGeometry.angle uses the same formula for all points. It gives π/2\pi / 2 when A=BA = B or C=BC = B. The angle is a right angle when θ=π/2\theta = \pi / 2, acute when θ<π/2\theta < \pi / 2 and obtuse when θ>π/2\theta > \pi / 2.

Explanations

L1 human

To measure the angle at BB, stand at BB and look at AA, then turn to look at CC. The angle is how far you turn, using the short way round. The order of AA and CC does not matter.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
