Definition

Let n≥2n \ge 2, and let Cn(ℝ2)C_n(\R^2) be the configuration space of nn identical particles in the plane, the space of nn-element subsets of ℝ2\R^2. Its fundamental group is the braid group BnB_n, with generators σ1,…,σn−1\sigma_1, \ldots, \sigma_{n-1}, where σi\sigma_i exchanges particles ii and i+1i+1 counterclockwise. The exchange statistics of nn identical particles in the plane is a unitary representation ρ\rho of BnB_n. It acts on a finite-dimensional complex inner product space of internal states. The particles are anyons if ρ(σi)2≠id⁡\rho(\sigma_i)^2 \ne \id for some ii, that is, if ρ\rho does not factor through the symmetric group SnS_n. They are abelian anyons if ρ\rho is one-dimensional, and non-abelian anyons if the matrices ρ(σi)\rho(\sigma_i) do not all commute.

Remarks

The generators σi\sigma_i are all conjugate in BnB_n, so a one-dimensional representation sends every σi\sigma_i to the same phase eiθe^{i\theta}, the statistics angle. The angle θ=0\theta = 0 gives bosons and θ=π\theta = \pi gives fermions; in both cases ρ(σi)2=1\rho(\sigma_i)^2 = 1.

Example: θ=π/3\theta = \pi/3 gives abelian anyons, since ρ(σi)2=e2πi/3≠1\rho(\sigma_i)^2 = e^{2\pi i/3} \ne 1; quasiparticles of the quantum Hall state at filling 1/31/3 are predicted to have this angle.

Non-example: θ=π\theta = \pi fails the defining condition, since ρ(σi)2=e2πi=1\rho(\sigma_i)^2 = e^{2\pi i} = 1; these particles are fermions.

In ℝd\R^d with d≥3d \ge 3 the fundamental group of the configuration space is SnS_n itself, so ρ(σi)2=id⁡\rho(\sigma_i)^2 = \id always and anyons cannot occur.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
