Number theory Diophantine approximation and transcendence Theorem
Apéry's theorem
Builds on Riemann zeta functionIrrational numberLeast common multiple
Statement
The number is irrational. Here is the Riemann zeta function.
Remarks
The proof constructs two sequences of rational numbers and , where the and the are integers, with the least common multiple of . The differences are nonzero and tend to so fast that still tends to . If , then would be a nonzero integer tending to , which is impossible. A useful series in the proof is For even arguments much more is known: is a rational multiple of , so it is transcendental, as in the Basel problem. It is not known whether is irrational, and it is not known whether is transcendental.

For a student
Apéry's sequences satisfy a three-term recurrence with polynomial coefficients, and their growth controls the speed of approximation. Later work gave other proofs, for example with Beukers' integrals over the unit cube. Rivoal proved that infinitely many of the values are irrational, and Zudilin proved that at least one of is irrational.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
