Approximate point spectrum

Definition
Let be a complex Banach space with identity map , and let be a bounded operator. The approximate point spectrum of is the set of for which there is a sequence in with
Remarks
Equivalently, if and only if is not bounded below, that is, there is no with for all . It satisfies , with the point spectrum, the continuous spectrum and the spectrum. It is closed, and it contains the boundary of , so it is nonempty when .
Example: for on , the unit vectors satisfy , so .
Non-example: for the right shift on , for all , so is bounded below and , although . More generally , so is the unit circle.
For a normal operator on a Hilbert space, .
