Approximation algorithm

Definition
Consider a minimization problem in which each instance has a nonempty finite set of feasible solutions. Each feasible solution has a cost , and is the least cost of a feasible solution of . Let be a real number. A -approximation algorithm for the problem is an algorithm with these properties:
- runs in time polynomial in the size of , as for problems in P.
- For every instance , outputs a feasible solution .
- For every instance , .
For a maximization problem, clause 3 becomes . The number is called the approximation ratio of .
Remarks
Example: for minimum vertex cover in a graph, take a maximal matching greedily and output both ends of each edge of . The output covers every edge, since an uncovered edge could be added to . Every vertex cover contains an end of each edge of , and these ends are distinct, so , while the output has vertices. So this is a -approximation algorithm.
Non-example: an exact algorithm that tries all subsets of vertices satisfies clauses 2 and 3 with , but it fails clause 1, since it takes exponential time.
A polynomial-time approximation scheme is a family of -approximation algorithms, one for each .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
