statement proposition

Archimedean property

Statement

Let FF be an Archimedean ordered field and let xx be an element of FF. Then there is a natural number nn with x<nx < n.

Remarks

Proof: apply the definition with y=1y = 1. Thus the natural numbers are not bounded above in FF. The real numbers are Archimedean, thus this holds for each real number xx.

Explanations

L1 human

No element of an Archimedean field is larger than all the natural numbers. For example, for the real number x=106+0.5x = 10^{6} + 0.5, the natural number n=106+1n = 10^{6} + 1 is larger.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
