Definition

Let II be a set and let M=(mij)i,j∈IM = (m_{ij})_{i, j \in I} be a Coxeter matrix, as in the definition of a Coxeter group. For letters x,yx, y and an integer m≥2m \ge 2, let Π(x,y;m)=xyxy⋯\Pi(x, y; m) = x y x y \cdots be the alternating word of length mm that begins with xx. The Artin group of MM is the group with the presentation A(M)=⟨si (i∈I)∣Π(si,sj;mij)=Π(sj,si;mij) for all i≠j with mij<∞⟩.A(M) = \langle s_i \ (i \in I) \mid \Pi(s_i, s_j; m_{ij}) = \Pi(s_j, s_i; m_{ij}) \text{ for all } i \ne j \text{ with } m_{ij} < \infty \rangle. A group is an Artin group, or Artin–Tits group, if it is isomorphic to A(M)A(M) for some Coxeter matrix MM.

Remarks

For mij=2m_{ij} = 2 the relation is sisj=sjsis_i s_j = s_j s_i, and for mij=3m_{ij} = 3 it is sisjsi=sjsisjs_i s_j s_i = s_j s_i s_j. The quotient of A(M)A(M) by the relations si2=1s_i^2 = 1 is the Coxeter group W(M)W(M). A(M)A(M) is of finite type, or spherical, when W(M)W(M) is finite.

Example: the braid group BnB_n is the Artin group with I={1,…,n−1}I = \set{1, \ldots, n-1}, mi,i+1=3m_{i, i+1} = 3 and mij=2m_{ij} = 2 for ∣i−j∣≥2\abs{i - j} \ge 2. These are exactly Artin's relations σiσi+1σi=σi+1σiσi+1\sigma_i \sigma_{i+1} \sigma_i = \sigma_{i+1} \sigma_i \sigma_{i+1} and σiσj=σjσi\sigma_i \sigma_j = \sigma_j \sigma_i. If all mij=∞m_{ij} = \infty, there are no relations and A(M)A(M) is the free group on II; if all mij=2m_{ij} = 2 for i≠ji \ne j, then A(M)A(M) is free abelian.

Non-example: the group ℤ/2\Z/2 is not an Artin group. In the abelianization of A(M)A(M), a relation with mijm_{ij} even becomes trivial, and a relation with mijm_{ij} odd becomes si=sjs_i = s_j. So the abelianization of an Artin group is free abelian, but ℤ/2\Z/2 is abelian and not free abelian.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
