Definition
Let be a three-manifold with a Riemannian metric and extrinsic curvature , as in the ADM formalism. Let () be an orthonormal frame (triad) for , let , and let be the spin connection of the triad. Fix a constant , the Barbero–Immirzi parameter. The Ashtekar–Barbero variables are:
- the densitized triad ;
- the -valued connection .
Their Poisson brackets are , and all other brackets vanish. Ashtekar's original variables are the complex choice (self-dual variables).
Remarks
The constraints of general relativity become: the Gauss constraint , the diffeomorphism constraint , and the Hamiltonian constraint, where is the curvature of . For and the Hamiltonian constraint is the polynomial . Example: on flat at rest, with , and the constant triad , one gets and , which satisfies all constraints. Non-example: the Levi-Civita connection of alone is not an Ashtekar–Barbero connection when , since it carries no information on the extrinsic curvature.
