Commutative algebra Definition
Associated graded ring
Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let be an ideal of , with . The associated graded ring of with respect to is the abelian group with the following multiplication. For and it is and it is extended to all elements by distributivity.
Remarks
The product is well defined: if and , then . With this product is a commutative graded ring whose degree part is the quotient ring . Example: for and with prime, each is spanned by the class of , and , so . Non-example: the direct sum with the same rule is not ; it is the Rees algebra , and is its quotient by . Let be a Noetherian local ring with residue field . Then the ring is a polynomial ring over in variables if and only if is a regular local ring.
