Associative quotient of a magma
Definition
Let be a magma. Let be the smallest congruence on such that for all . The associative quotient of is the quotient magma , with the quotient map , .
Remarks
The quotient is a semigroup, since . Universal property: for every semigroup and every magma homomorphism , there is exactly one homomorphism with . This holds because the kernel of is a congruence that contains all the pairs , so it contains .
Example: if is already a semigroup, then is equality and the associative quotient is itself. Example: for the free magma on one letter , the associative quotient is the free semigroup on . It is isomorphic to the positive integers under addition, with a bracketed word sent to its length.
Non-example: the one-element semigroup is a quotient of every nonempty magma, but it is not the associative quotient of the free magma on . The length map to is a homomorphism to a semigroup that does not factor through the one-element quotient, so the universal property fails.
In Mathlib this construction is Magma.AssocQuotient.
