Asymptotic expansion
Builds on Little o notation
Definition
Let be a subset of or of , and let be a limit point of , possibly . An asymptotic sequence at is a sequence of functions on such that for each , where is little o notation. Let be a function on and let be complex numbers. The formal series is an asymptotic expansion of at if for each This is written as .
Remarks
Example: on with and , one has . Check: , and this is because . Non-example: , is not an asymptotic sequence at , because fails. For a fixed asymptotic sequence, the coefficients are unique: is the limit of as , whenever does not vanish near . Different functions can have the same expansion: and both have the zero expansion in powers of as . The most common case is the power scale at or at ; an equivalent condition is then that the error after terms is , respectively .
