Augmenting along a path raises the flow value by delta
Builds on Directed graph
Statement
Let be a finite directed graph with a source , a sink and a capacity function on the edges. Let be a flow of value on this network. A flow obeys on each edge, and it is conserved at each vertex other than and .
Let be an augmenting path from to . Each step of uses an edge of either forwards or backwards. A forward edge has spare capacity . A backward edge carries positive flow . Let be the smallest of the spare capacities of the forward edges and the flows of the backward edges on .
Define a new function as follows. Add to on each forward edge of . Subtract from on each backward edge of . Leave unchanged on all other edges.
Then is a flow on the network, and its value is .
Remarks
The choice of keeps every edge value between and its capacity. At each inner vertex of the two changes cancel, so conservation still holds. At the net outflow grows by exactly .
