Automorphism
Builds on StructureIsomorphism
Definition
Let be a structure for a signature . An automorphism of is an isomorphism from to . The set of automorphisms of is written .
Remarks
Example: the map is an automorphism of the field , because it is a bijection of to itself with , , and .
Non-example: the map on is an injective homomorphism but not an automorphism, because it is not surjective: is not in its image.
The set is a group under composition, with the identity map as identity element. The only automorphism of the field is the identity.
