Bäcklund transform
Definition
Let and be two partial differential equations for real functions of two variables . A Bäcklund transform between and is a system of first-order equations with these two properties.
- The compatibility condition of the system, for an unknown , holds exactly when satisfies .
- Each pair of solutions of the system has solving .
When , it is called an auto-Bäcklund transform.
Remarks
Example: the Cauchy–Riemann system , is an auto-Bäcklund transform of Laplace's equation . Indeed and , so the system is compatible exactly when . Then for functions, so is harmonic too.
Example: for a constant , the system is an auto-Bäcklund transform of the sine-Gordon equation . With and , one gets and , so and .
Non-example: the system , is compatible for every function . So it imposes no equation on , and it is not a Bäcklund transform between two equations.
