Banach–Mazur compactum
Builds on Normed vector spaceOperator norm
Description
Let be an integer. For two real normed spaces and of dimension , the Banach–Mazur distance is Here is the operator norm. The Banach–Mazur compactum is the set of isometry classes of -dimensional real normed spaces with the metric . It is a compact metric space.
Remarks
The function is a metric on isometry classes. It is symmetric because is the same number for and . The triangle inequality comes from , so . If , then a compactness argument gives an isomorphism with , and a multiple of it is an isometry.
By John's theorem, for every -dimensional normed space , where is with the Euclidean norm. So the diameter of in the multiplicative form is at most . Gluskin proved that this order is right: there are -dimensional spaces at distance at least from each other, for a constant that does not depend on .
