Band matrix

Builds on RingMatrix

Definition

Let RR be a ring, let A=(aij)A = (a_{ij}) be an m×nm \times n matrix over RR, and let p,q≥0p, q \ge 0 be integers. The matrix AA is a band matrix with lower bandwidth pp and upper bandwidth qq when aij=0whenever i>j+p or j>i+q.a_{ij} = 0 \quad \text{whenever } i > j + p \text{ or } j > i + q. The bandwidth of AA is often taken as the least kk such that the condition holds with p=q=kp = q = k.

Remarks

Example: (1200345067890123)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 2 & 0 & 0 \\ 3 & 4 & 5 & 0 \\ 6 & 7 & 8 & 9 \\ 0 & 1 & 2 & 3 \end{pmatrix} has lower bandwidth 22 and upper bandwidth 11: the entries with i>j+2i > j + 2 or j>i+1j > i + 1 are all 00. Non-example: (101010001)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 & 1 \\ 0 & 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix} has no upper bandwidth q=1q = 1, because a13=1a_{13} = 1 and 3>1+13 > 1 + 1. With p=q=0p = q = 0 one gets the diagonal matrices, and with p=q=1p = q = 1 the tridiagonal matrices. A square matrix with p=0p = 0 is upper triangular. The term is mostly used when pp and qq are small compared with the size of the matrix.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
