Ordinary differential equations Stability Lemma
Barbalat's lemma
Builds on Uniform continuityLyapunov function
Statement
Let be differentiable. Assume that the limit exists and is finite. Assume that is uniformly continuous on . Then .
Remarks
Suppose . Then there are and times with . Uniform continuity gives , independent of , with and constant sign on . Then for all , which contradicts the Cauchy criterion for the limit of .
The hypothesis on is necessary. For , the limit of is , but does not tend to . Here is not uniformly continuous.
An equivalent form: if is uniformly continuous and converges, then . In stability theory, it is applied to for a Lyapunov function along a solution . If is bounded below, and is uniformly continuous in , then .

For a student
For time-varying systems, LaSalle's invariance principle does not apply directly. Barbalat's lemma replaces it: from a Lyapunov function with one gets along solutions, which often forces some components of the state to tend to . This is a standard step in adaptive control. A common sufficient condition for uniform continuity of is that is bounded.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
