Baroclinic instability
Summary
Baroclinic instability is the instability of a rotating, stably stratified flow whose speed changes with height, in thermal wind balance with a horizontal temperature gradient. Small disturbances grow by releasing the available potential energy stored in the sloping density surfaces. It is the mechanism that creates the cyclones and anticyclones of mid-latitude weather, and the mesoscale eddies of the ocean.
