Thermal wind

Builds on Geostrophic balanceCoriolis force

Statement

Consider a dry atmosphere that is an ideal gas with specific gas constant RR, described in pressure coordinates (x,y,p)(x, y, p) with xx eastward and yy northward. Let f≠0f \ne 0 be a constant Coriolis parameter, Φ\Phi the geopotential and TT the temperature. Assume hydrostatic balance ∂Φ/∂p=−RT/p\partial \Phi / \partial p = -R T / p. Assume that the horizontal wind is the geostrophic wind 𝐯g=(ug,vg)\mathbf{v}_g = (u_g, v_g) with ug=−f−1 ∂Φ/∂yu_g = -f^{-1} \, \partial \Phi / \partial y and vg=f−1 ∂Φ/∂xv_g = f^{-1} \, \partial \Phi / \partial x, derivatives taken at constant pp. Then ∂ug∂ln⁡p=Rf∂T∂y,∂vg∂ln⁡p=−Rf∂T∂x.\frac{\partial u_g}{\partial \ln p} = \frac{R}{f} \frac{\partial T}{\partial y}, \qquad \frac{\partial v_g}{\partial \ln p} = -\frac{R}{f} \frac{\partial T}{\partial x}. Consequently, for pressures p1<p0p_1 < p_0, let 𝐯T=𝐯g(p1)−𝐯g(p0)\mathbf{v}_T = \mathbf{v}_g(p_1) - \mathbf{v}_g(p_0) be the thermal wind. Then 𝐯T=Rfln⁡(p0p1)𝐤×∇pTˉ.\mathbf{v}_T = \frac{R}{f} \ln\left(\frac{p_0}{p_1}\right) \mathbf{k} \times \nabla_p \bar T. Here 𝐤\mathbf{k} is the upward unit vector and Tˉ\bar T is the mean of TT over ln⁡p\ln p between p1p_1 and p0p_0.

Remarks

The proof differentiates the geostrophic relations with respect to pp and exchanges the order of derivatives: ∂ug/∂p=−f−1∂y(∂Φ/∂p)=(R/(fp)) ∂T/∂y\partial u_g / \partial p = -f^{-1} \partial_y (\partial \Phi / \partial p) = (R / (f p)) \, \partial T / \partial y. Integration in ln⁡p\ln p from ln⁡p0\ln p_0 to ln⁡p1\ln p_1 gives the second formula.

So the vertical shear of the geostrophic wind is parallel to the isotherms of the layer, with cold air to the left in the northern hemisphere (f>0f > 0). Example: in mid-latitudes of the northern hemisphere the temperature decreases northward, ∂T/∂y<0\partial T / \partial y < 0. Since pp decreases upward, ugu_g increases with height, which explains the westerly jet streams. With f=10−4f = 10^{-4} s−1^{-1}, R=287R = 287 J/(kg K), ∂T/∂y=−5\partial T / \partial y = -5 K per 10001000 km and p0/p1=4p_0 / p_1 = 4, the shear is ug(p1)−ug(p0)≈287⋅5⋅10−6⋅1.39/10−4≈20u_g(p_1) - u_g(p_0) \approx 287 \cdot 5 \cdot 10^{-6} \cdot 1.39 / 10^{-4} \approx 20 m/s.

In a Boussinesq fluid with buoyancy bb and height zz, the same argument gives f ∂ug/∂z=−∂b/∂yf \, \partial u_g / \partial z = -\partial b / \partial y and f ∂vg/∂z=∂b/∂xf \, \partial v_g / \partial z = \partial b / \partial x. The relation fails near the equator, where f→0f \to 0 and geostrophic balance does not hold.

Going deeper

For a student

The thermal wind relation combines the two leading balances of large-scale flow: geostrophic balance in the horizontal and hydrostatic balance in the vertical. It links the wind field and the temperature field, so a forecaster can infer the vertical shear from a temperature map. A wind that turns clockwise with height in the northern hemisphere (veering) indicates warm advection, and a wind that turns anticlockwise (backing) indicates cold advection. In quasi-geostrophic theory the relation holds automatically, since the wind and the buoyancy both come from one stream function. A flow with vertical shear in thermal wind balance stores available potential energy that baroclinic instability can release.
