definition

Alternating multilinear map

Definition

Let FF be a field, let n≥1n \ge 1, and let VV and WW be vector spaces over FF. A multilinear map f ⁣:Vn→Wf \colon V^n \to W is alternating when f(v1,…,vn)=0f(v_1, \dots, v_n) = 0 for each family with vi=vjv_i = v_j for some i≠ji \ne j.

Remarks

An alternating map changes sign when two arguments are exchanged. If the characteristic of FF is not 22, then this sign rule implies that the map is alternating. An alternating map is zero on each linearly dependent family. The determinant is an alternating multilinear map of the rows of a square matrix.

Explanations

L1 human

An alternating map gives zero as soon as two inputs are the same. It follows that swapping two inputs changes the sign of the value. The signed area of the parallelogram of two plane vectors is an alternating bilinear map.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
