statement proposition

Determinant is multilinear in the rows

Statement

Let KK be a commutative ring, let n≥1n \ge 1, and let 1≤i≤n1 \le i \le n. Let AA, BB, CC be n×nn \times n matrices over KK that agree outside row ii. Let aa, bb, cc be row ii of AA, BB, CC, and assume c=sa+tbc = sa + tb with s,t∈Ks, t \in K. Then det⁡C=sdet⁡A+tdet⁡B,\det C = s \det A + t \det B, where det⁡\det is the determinant.

Remarks

This is property 1 of the definition of the determinant. The determinant is not additive in the whole matrix: in general det⁡(A+B)≠det⁡A+det⁡B\det(A + B) \ne \det A + \det B. By det⁡AT=det⁡A\det A^T = \det A, the determinant is also multilinear in the columns.

Explanations

L1 human

If we fix all rows but one, then the determinant is a linear function of the remaining row. So a sum in one row splits the determinant into a sum of two determinants. A factor in one row comes out of the determinant.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
