Characteristic polynomial

Definition

Let KK be a commutative ring, let n≥1n \ge 1, and let AA be an n×nn \times n matrix over KK. The characteristic polynomial of AA is the polynomial pA(t)=det⁡(tIn−A)∈K[t],p_A(t) = \det(t I_n - A) \in K[t], where det⁡\det is the determinant of a matrix with entries in the polynomial ring K[t]K[t].

Remarks

The polynomial pAp_A is monic of degree nn. For A=(abcd)A = \begin{pmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{pmatrix}, pA(t)=t2−(a+d)t+(ad−bc)p_A(t) = t^2 - (a + d) t + (ad - bc). Some authors use det⁡(A−tIn)\det(A - t I_n), which equals (−1)npA(t)(-1)^n p_A(t). Over a field, the roots of pAp_A are the eigenvalues of AA.

Explanations

L1 human

The number λ\lambda is an eigenvalue exactly when A−λIA - \lambda I is singular, that is, when det⁡(λI−A)=0\det(\lambda I - A) = 0. If we replace λ\lambda by a variable tt, then we get a polynomial. Its roots are the eigenvalues.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
