statement proposition

Determinant is a coefficient of the characteristic polynomial

Statement

Let KK be a commutative ring, let n≥1n \ge 1, and let AA be an n×nn \times n matrix over KK. Then the constant coefficient of the characteristic polynomial pA(t)=det⁡(tIn−A)p_A(t) = \det(t I_n - A) is pA(0)=(−1)ndet⁡A,p_A(0) = (-1)^n \det A, where det⁡\det is the determinant.

Remarks

The proof sets t=0t = 0: pA(0)=det⁡(−A)=(−1)ndet⁡Ap_A(0) = \det(-A) = (-1)^n \det A. So, over a field, 00 is an eigenvalue of AA if and only if det⁡A=0\det A = 0.

Explanations

L1 human

The constant term of the characteristic polynomial is the determinant, up to a sign. This follows when we put t=0t = 0. So a matrix with determinant zero has the eigenvalue 00.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
