Cofactor

Definition

Let KK be a commutative ring and let AA be an n×nn \times n matrix over KK, with n≥2n \ge 2. The cofactor of AA in position (i,j)(i, j) is Cij=(−1)i+jMij,C_{ij} = (-1)^{i+j} M_{ij}, where MijM_{ij} is the first minor of AA that results when row ii and column jj are deleted.

Remarks

The signs (−1)i+j(-1)^{i+j} form a checkerboard pattern, with ++ in the top left corner. The cofactors give the Laplace expansion of the determinant. The transpose of the matrix of cofactors is the adjugate matrix.

Explanations

L1 human

A cofactor is a minor with a sign. The sign is ++ or −-, according to a checkerboard pattern. For the matrix (abcd)\begin{pmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{pmatrix}, the cofactors are C11=dC_{11} = d, C12=−cC_{12} = -c, C21=−bC_{21} = -b and C22=aC_{22} = a.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
