Minor
Definition
Let be a commutative ring, let be an matrix over , and let . A minor of order of is the determinant of a submatrix of . Such a submatrix consists of the entries in chosen rows and chosen columns of . For an matrix , delete row and column to get an matrix. The minor is the determinant of this matrix.
Remarks
The minors are called first minors. Over a field, the rank of is the largest such that has a nonzero minor of order . The minors with the same chosen rows and columns are principal minors.
Explanations
L1 human
A minor is the determinant of a smaller square piece of a matrix. For a matrix, we delete one row and one column and take the determinant of what is left. Minors appear in the expansion of determinants and in the formula for the inverse.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
