Cauchy–Binet formula

Statement

Let KK be a commutative ring, let m≤nm \le n, let AA be an m×nm \times n matrix and BB an n×mn \times m matrix over KK. For a subset S⊆{1,…,n}S \subseteq \{1, \dots, n\} with mm elements, let ASA_S be the m×mm \times m matrix of the columns of AA in SS. Let BSB^S be the m×mm \times m matrix of the rows of BB in SS. Then det⁡(AB)=∑Sdet⁡(AS)det⁡(BS),\det(AB) = \sum_{S} \det(A_S) \det(B^S), where the sum runs over all subsets SS of {1,…,n}\{1, \dots, n\} with mm elements.

Remarks

For m=nm = n, the sum has one term, and the formula is det⁡(AB)=det⁡Adet⁡B\det(AB) = \det A \det B. If m>nm > n, then det⁡(AB)=0\det(AB) = 0. For m=1m = 1, it is the formula for the product of a row and a column. The determinants det⁡(AS)\det(A_S) and det⁡(BS)\det(B^S) are minors of order mm.

Explanations

L1 human

The Cauchy–Binet formula computes the determinant of a product of two rectangular matrices. It sums products of matching minors of the two factors. It generalizes the product rule for determinants of square matrices.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
