statement proposition

Scaling a row scales the determinant

Statement

Let KK be a commutative ring, let AA be an n×nn \times n matrix over KK, and let c∈Kc \in K. Let BB be the matrix that results when one row of AA is multiplied by cc. Then det⁡B=cdet⁡A\det B = c \det A, where det⁡\det is the determinant.

Remarks

This is a special case of linearity in each row. It describes the effect of the scaling row operation on the determinant. Scaling all nn rows gives det⁡(cA)=cndet⁡A\det(cA) = c^n \det A, see the determinant of a scalar multiple.

Explanations

L1 human

If we stretch one edge of a box by the factor cc, then its volume is multiplied by cc. The determinant behaves in the same way. For example, doubling one row doubles the determinant.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
