statement proposition

Determinant of a scalar multiple

Statement

Let KK be a commutative ring, let AA be an n×nn \times n matrix over KK, and let c∈Kc \in K. Then det⁡(cA)=cndet⁡A,\det(cA) = c^n \det A, where cAcA is the scalar multiple and det⁡\det is the determinant.

Remarks

Each of the nn rows is multiplied by cc, and each row contributes one factor cc. For example, det⁡(−A)=(−1)ndet⁡A\det(-A) = (-1)^n \det A. So an n×nn \times n real skew-symmetric matrix with nn odd has determinant 00.

Explanations

L1 human

Scaling a matrix by cc stretches every edge of a box by cc. In nn dimensions, this multiplies the volume by cnc^n. So doubling a 3×33 \times 3 matrix multiplies its determinant by 88.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
