statement proposition

Determinant of a block triangular matrix

Statement

Let KK be a commutative ring, let AA be an m×mm \times m matrix, BB an m×nm \times n matrix and DD an n×nn \times n matrix over KK. Then the block matrix satisfies det⁡(AB0D)=det⁡A⋅det⁡D,\det \begin{pmatrix} A & B \\ 0 & D \end{pmatrix} = \det A \cdot \det D, where 00 is the n×mn \times m zero matrix and det⁡\det is the determinant.

Remarks

The same holds for the lower block triangular matrix (A0CD)\begin{pmatrix} A & 0 \\ C & D \end{pmatrix}. It generalizes the rule for triangular matrices. For a general block matrix, det⁡(ABCD)≠det⁡Adet⁡D−det⁡Bdet⁡C\det \begin{pmatrix} A & B \\ C & D \end{pmatrix} \ne \det A \det D - \det B \det C in general.

Explanations

L1 human

When a matrix has a block of zeros in its lower left corner, its determinant splits. It is the product of the determinants of the two diagonal blocks. The block BB does not matter, just like the entries above the diagonal of a triangular matrix.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
