Statement
Let a column of ideal gas of molar mass have pressure , density and absolute temperature at height . Assume hydrostatic balance with constant gravitational acceleration . Assume the ideal gas law , where is the molar gas constant. Let .
- If is constant, then , where is the scale height.
- If with a constant lapse rate , then for ,
Remarks
Proof: the two laws give the ordinary differential equation ; integrate from to . For constant this gives an exponential; for it gives . As the second formula tends to the first, since . Example: with K, km, so in an isothermal model the pressure at km is about , close to the observed half of sea-level pressure. Without constant the formula fails at heights comparable with the planet's radius, where decreases.

For a student
The formula combines the two basic laws of a resting atmosphere: hydrostatic balance and the ideal gas law. The standard atmosphere used in aviation is built from pieces of form 2, with different lapse rates in different layers. The density obeys the same laws, with exponent in case 2. The hypsometric equation is the general form for any temperature profile.
