Definition
Let be or , and let be a Hausdorff locally convex space over . A barrel in is a subset that is closed, convex, balanced and absorbing. is barrelled if every barrel in is a neighbourhood of .
Remarks
Some authors define barrelled spaces among all topological vector spaces, with the same condition. Example: every Banach space is barrelled. If is a barrel, then since is absorbing. By the Baire category theorem some , hence , has an interior point. Convexity and balance then give that contains a ball around . The same argument shows that every Fréchet space is barrelled. Non-example: let be the space of finitely supported real sequences with the norm , and let . is a barrel, but it is not a neighbourhood of : for each the vector has norm and lies outside once . In a barrelled space, every family of continuous linear maps into a locally convex space that is bounded at each point is equicontinuous.
