Baryon acoustic oscillations
Summary
Baryon acoustic oscillations are sound waves that travelled through the plasma of photons and baryons in the early universe and stopped at recombination. They left a preferred comoving distance, the sound horizon, of about Mpc, between regions of higher density. This distance appears as a bump in the correlation function of galaxies and serves as a standard ruler to measure the expansion history.
