Bass stable range
Builds on RingGroup of units of a ring
Definition
Let be a ring with identity and let . A row of elements of is unimodular if . Let . The ring satisfies the stable range condition if for every unimodular row there are such that is unimodular. The stable rank is the least such , or if there is none.
Remarks
If , then for every . Bass's original notation is the condition here, so the index is shifted by one. The condition says: if , then is a unit for some . Bass proved that a commutative Noetherian ring of Krull dimension has .
Example: a field has . If and , take ; if , then and is a unit. Every commutative local ring also has stable rank .
Non-example of : the ring . The row is unimodular since , but is never for an integer . So , and Bass's bound with gives .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
