Baumslag–Solitar group
Example
Let and be nonzero integers. The Baumslag–Solitar group is the group with the presentation It is a one-relator group, since the presentation has the single relator . It is also the HNN extension of the infinite cyclic group that conjugates onto by , with stable letter .
Remarks
Small cases: , and is the fundamental group of the Klein bottle. The group is isomorphic to the semidirect product , where the generator of acts by multiplication by . The isomorphism sends to and to the generator of . In particular is solvable.
is residually finite if and only if , or .
is not Hopfian. Let be the endomorphism with and . It is well defined, since . It is surjective, since . It is not injective: the element is not by Britton's lemma, but sends it to .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
