Definition

Let GG be a finitely presented group with a finite presentation ⟨S∣R⟩\langle S \mid R \rangle, and let F(S)F(S) be the free group on SS. Let ww be a word over S∪S−1S \cup S^{-1} that represents the identity of GG. Its area Area(w)\mathrm{Area}(w) is the least N≥0N \ge 0 such that ww is a product of NN conjugates of relators and their inverses in F(S)F(S). This means an equality w=∏i=1Nui ri±1 ui−1w = \prod_{i=1}^{N} u_i \, r_i^{\pm 1} \, u_i^{-1} in F(S)F(S), with words uiu_i and relators ri∈Rr_i \in R. The Dehn function of the presentation is the function δ ⁣:ℕ→ℕ\delta \colon \N \to \N given by δ(n)=max⁡{Area(w):∣w∣≤n, wˉ=1 in G}.\delta(n) = \max \set{\mathrm{Area}(w) : \abs{w} \le n, \ \bar w = 1 \text{ in } G}.

Remarks

For functions f,g ⁣:ℕ→ℕf, g \colon \N \to \N, write f⪯gf \preceq g if there is C≥1C \ge 1 with f(n)≤Cg(Cn+C)+Cn+Cf(n) \le C g(Cn + C) + Cn + C for all nn, and f≃gf \simeq g if f⪯g⪯ff \preceq g \preceq f. The Dehn functions of two finite presentations of the same group are ≃\simeq-equivalent, so one speaks of the Dehn function of GG.

Example: for ℤ2=⟨a,b∣aba−1b−1⟩\Z^2 = \langle a, b \mid aba^{-1}b^{-1} \rangle, the word anbna−nb−na^n b^n a^{-n} b^{-n} of length 4n4n has area n2n^2, and every null-homotopic word of length nn has area at most a constant times n2n^2; so δ(n)≃n2\delta(n) \simeq n^2.

Example: free groups and finite groups have Dehn function ≃n\simeq n.

Non-example: the lamplighter group is finitely generated but not finitely presented, so it has no Dehn function in this sense.

A finitely presented group has a solvable word problem if and only if its Dehn function is bounded above by a recursive function. The Baumslag–Solitar group ⟨a,b∣bab−1=a2⟩\langle a, b \mid b a b^{-1} = a^2 \rangle has an exponential Dehn function.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
