Lamplighter group

Example

Let L=⨁i∈ℤℤ/2ℤL = \bigoplus_{i \in \Z} \Z/2\Z be the group of finitely supported functions f ⁣:ℤ→ℤ/2ℤf \colon \Z \to \Z/2\Z, with pointwise addition. Let ℤ\Z act on LL by shifts: (n⋅f)(i)=f(i−n)(n \cdot f)(i) = f(i - n). The lamplighter group is the semidirect product ℤ/2ℤ≀ℤ=L⋊ℤ,\Z/2\Z \wr \Z = L \rtimes \Z, the restricted wreath product of ℤ/2ℤ\Z/2\Z by ℤ\Z. An element is a pair (f,n)(f, n). Here ff says which lamps on the integer line are lit, finitely many of them, and nn is the position of the lamplighter.

It is generated by t=(0,1)t = (0, 1), which moves the lamplighter one step, and a=(δ0,0)a = (\delta_0, 0), which switches the lamp at 00. So it is a finitely generated group. It is an extension of the abelian group LL by the abelian group ℤ\Z, so it is solvable of derived length 22. Solvable groups are amenable, so it is amenable.

Remarks

The group has exponential growth. Consider the 2n2^n words aε1t aε2t⋯aεnta^{\varepsilon_1} t \, a^{\varepsilon_2} t \cdots a^{\varepsilon_n} t with εi∈{0,1}\varepsilon_i \in \set{0, 1}, of length at most 2n2n. They give distinct elements, because the lamps lit along the way, at nn consecutive positions, record the sequence (ε1,…,εn)(\varepsilon_1, \ldots, \varepsilon_n). So it is a solvable group that is not virtually nilpotent. It has the infinite presentation ⟨a,t∣a2, [a,tkat−k] for k∈ℤ⟩\langle a, t \mid a^2, \ [a, t^k a t^{-k}] \text{ for } k \in \Z \rangle, and it is not finitely presented.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)
