Definition
Let a straight body occupy , where the cross-section has a diameter much smaller than the length . Let the body be made of a linear elastic material and carry a transverse load per unit length. A beam theory is a model of this body in which:
- The unknowns are functions of alone, such as the transverse deflection of the axis and the rotation of the cross-section.
- The displacement of the body is given in terms of these unknowns by an assumption on the kinematics of the cross-sections.
- The internal forces are the shear force and the bending moment . With and measured in the same direction they satisfy the equilibrium equations and .
- A constitutive law, derived from the elastic law and the assumption of clause 2, expresses and through the unknowns.
Remarks
Example: Euler–Bernoulli theory assumes that cross-sections stay plane and normal to the deformed axis, so , and it takes with Young's modulus and second moment of area . Then the equilibrium equations give , the Euler–Bernoulli beam equation.
Non-example: a model in which the body is described by the full displacement field is three-dimensional elasticity and fails clause 1.
The sign conventions for and differ between texts; the ones here make a sagging moment positive when and point downwards.
