Functions of a complex variable Definition
Beltrami equation
Definition
Let be an open set in . Let be a measurable function with for some constant . The Beltrami equation with Beltrami coefficient is where and are the Wirtinger derivatives of . A solution is a function , that is, with locally square-integrable weak first partial derivatives, that satisfies the equation almost everywhere on .
Remarks
Example: for the equation is , which is the Cauchy–Riemann system, and its solutions are the holomorphic functions on . Example: for a constant with , the function has and , so it solves the equation with . Non-example: the coefficient fails the condition . Then the equation reads , and every function of alone solves it, so the equation is degenerate and its solutions are never homeomorphisms. A homeomorphic solution is a quasiconformal mapping whose complex dilatation is .
